Relatives

When families have a member who suffers from an illness, a fall or maybe a recent hospitalisation for example there can be a great deal of stress and worry on the other family members. Sometimes relatives may not want to receive Homecare assistance following a diagnosis or may believe they are more then capable of looking after themselves despite family concerns.


These worries can be further aggravated and upsetting if your family members are not local and you are having to make long journeys. In order that you are able to help it is important to really understand the needs of your relative. When a parent, or any close relative becomes less able to manage at home, it can be very difficult to know what to do. Many people find such situations hugely stressful, and there may be different views within the family about what’s needed. Your loved ones themselves may not want to accept help at home and you may need to encourage them that a Homecare package can be the ideal solution.


Sometimes encouraging a relative to accept help can present a real challenge and even discussing the issue can create some resilience. The most important thing is to take the time to really understand why the person is so resistant to the idea. Realising that they may need a little extra help to remain in their own home can be daunting for someone who is used to being able to look after themselves so it is hardly surprising that many people prefer not to have to think about Homecare and will try hard to avoid any discussions about it.


The primary issue may be allowing someone to come into their home to discuss the options and in many cases it may help to offer a short term solution to your relative in the form assistance at home in the form of Cooking, Cleaning, Laundry or even just to make a cup of tea and have a chat rather than personal care. Once we have been able to make a visit it may be easier to discuss your relatives concerns as you will be able to contact us and seek information which may put your relative at ease.


If a relative has suffered a trauma for example a hospitalisation it may be easier to have the conversation about home care with them. Sometimes you may have a relative living on their own and they would find it easier to manage on a daily basis and find it reassuring to know a regular carer will be visiting at a scheduled time every day who will be able to spot any abnormalities in their health and current situation. The carer will then document each visit and you may be able to monitor your relatives progress. The majority of people can recieve the right kind of practical, professional and compassionate help available to encourage and maintain independence. The majority of our clients value a sense of friendship, companionship and emotional support they require to enjoy their every day.

Some relatives just need a visit or two a week, while others need more frequent visits or a live-in carer to provide daily support and other assistance. We aim to provide whatever’s needed, to give the flexible help and support that your relative needs. We’ll work with you and other services such as GPs & health and social services to provide the care solution to best suit your relative's needs.


At The Care Bureau we have dedicated supervisors in our Homecare team who will monitor clients and make spot inspections to ensure our clients are receiving the correct level of care. If we believe we are making too little or too much assistance we can have the clients care plan adjusted as necessary.
